La Société Saint Jean-Baptiste has its beginnings in Québec. This charitable organization has for their motto: “make the people better .” They were dedicated in the promotion of the national and industrial interests of the French-Canadian population. It was on May 16^th, 1912 that a chapter of this society was founded in Gravelbourg. Charles Lemoine executed the very first assembly and not long after, a permanent committee was selected for the desicion makings of the society. Edmond Cardinal was elected President, Napoléon Aussant, first Vice-President; Charles Lemoine, second Vice-President; Father Louis-Pierre Gravel, Honorary President; Honorable A.Turgeon, Honorary Vice-President; Father J.A.Magnan, Chaplain ; Jos Doutre, Archivist Secretary; Elphège Gauthier, Arms Sergeant; J.A.Piché, Treasurer and Sam Poulin, Ordnance Officer.

Following the second assembly held in Gravelbourg, on September 15^th, 1912 Sam Poulin was elected Sergeant of Arms, Joseph Lafrenière, Ordnance Officer, Phi Deaust, Armand Morin and Tancrède Bourgeois were elected Directors.

La Société Saint Jean-Baptiste took the initiative of building the Parish Hall as well as a playing field for the sports community. This society strongly promotted the education of the French language. Also, they organized many patriotic and cultural activities such as; physical culture, fanfares, drama clubs, cinemas, library and French evenings. La Société Saint Jean-Baptiste was very active in the community of Gravelbourg. They contributed immensely to the cultural, social and religious life of Gravelbourg. It is due to the efforts of these founders that Gravelbourg has become and is a French cutural centre.

Always ready to defend the rights of the French-Catholic minority, la Société Saint Jean-Baptiste was a cohesion of force for the population of Gravelbourg by the organization of comunal activities of social and cultural nature.
