1855-1915

His Excellency Archbishop Adélard Langevin was born in Saint-Isidore-de-Laprairie on August 23^rd, 1855. The young Adélard studied at the Collège de Montréal and in 1881, he joined the Oblates. He was ordained a priest at the Bon-Pasteur Parish in Montréal by Bishop Fabre on July 30^th, 1882. Archbishop Langevin spent eight years at Ottawa’s Major Seminary as a professor and director. In 1893, he was called to Winnipeg by Archbishop Taché, Archbishop of Saint Boniface, for the position of curator of the Sainte-Marie Parish and as Provincial Superior of the Oblates. He was elected Archbishop of Saint Boniface on January 8^th, 1895, and was consecrated Archbishop by Bishop Fabre in Saint Boniface Cathedral on the following March 19^th. He administered the Saint Boniface Archdiocese until his death on June 15^th, 1915, in Montréal. 

It was under the administration of this valiant and energetic Archbishop that in 1906, Rivière-la-Vieille began to flourish with settlers and that the Reverend Louis-Pierre Gravel chose to found the town of Gravelbourg.

A plaque displayed in the Co-Cathedral is dedicated to Mgr. Langevin’s memory. It reads:

“In cherished memory of Archbishop Adélard Langevin, O.M.I., whose inspiration guided Abbé Pierre Gravel in the founding and extraordinary growth of Gravelbourg.“
