The First Level of Paintings: 
Curtains & The Capital Sins

A heavy, sombre curtain drapes the lower east and west walls of the Co-Cathedral. This earthy colored curtain, painted by Msgr. Maillard, symbolizes the great weaknesses of mankind which hold him earthbound. He decided to paint the Seven Deadly Sins on these curtains. The sins Pride, Envy, Covetousness and Lust are written in French and in English on the east wall and the sins Lust (represented twice), Greed, Anger and Laziness were painted only in French on the west wall (no one is certain why one side is translated and not the other). It seems as if we are continuously reminded of our sins. The red curtain above the brown curtain represents the blood of Jesus Christ who washes away (purifies) the sins of the world.
