The intricate pictures and designs that Msgr Charles Maillard painted on the windows in the interior of the present Co-Cathedral were slowly fading away in 1977. The Gravelbourg Parish, having little money to spare during the 20’s and 30’s, could not afford to purchase the authentic stained glass windows that Msgr. Maillard had hoped and dreamed of installing in his precious church. Able to defeat any challenge, Msgr. Maillard painted the Cathedral windows free handedly with the basic materials which he possessed.

Most Reverend Noël Delaquis, sixth Bishop of the Gravelbourg Diocese,  initiated a challenging project that would realize Msgr. Maillard’s dream. Real stained glass windows were installed to celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the Diocese and to honour the artistic works of Msgr. Maillard. Bishop Delaquis intended to redo the original window designs that were retraceable. They would then be preserved permanently, and the Cathedral would be given back the style that the artist had created in his original realisation. Bishop Delaquis hired Burns-Hanley Company Limited from Regina. Wilfrid Burns and Paul Hanley were the Canadian agents of the French artists, André-Marie Rault and son, Frédéric-Marie Rault, third and fourth generations of the Vitraux d’Art E.Rault Company. André-Marie Rault’s stained glass windows adorn many churches throughout Canada, the United States, Africa, France and even Rome. His first engagement in Western Canada was the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Regina. André and Frédéric Rault have also completed stained glass windows for the churches of Laflèche and Glentworth, as well as one for St. James United Church in Wolseley and two for Craik United Church.

 Mr. André-Marie Rault, already familiar with Msgr. Maillard’s paintings, wrote to Bishop Delaquis with great enthusiasm: “Dear Bishop, I am delighted to collaborate with Msgr. Maillard’s masterpiece by following his designs and ideas for the decoration of the windows. This is an enormous task  because it is important not to destroy the composition that is already present. The eyes of the worshippers and of the visitors cannot be more attracted to either the paintings or the windows, we have to create a WHOLE.” The Raults visited the Cathedral in 1977 and later returned to France to execute the first sketches. 

 The front window of the Blessed Mother was the first window to be completed. It was generously paid for by an anonymous benefactor. Our Lady of the Assumption window was created to honour the patron of the Diocese and the titular of the Cathedral. This wonderful stained glass window was installed by Paul Hanley, Wilf Burns and team in April of 1978. Bishop Delaquis expressed with tremendous joy and satisfaction: “The beauty in the window is worthy of its spiritual signification.”

 Being that the Cathedral has many angels painted on its ceiling, Bishop Delaquis chose the representation of Archangel Gabriel, “Force of God”, who bears the Good News to Mary, in the east balcony and Archangel Michael, “Who is like God”, victorious over the combat with the forces of evil, in the west balcony. The stained glass windows of the Virgin Mary and of the archangels were consecrated by Bishop Aimé Decosse, fifth Bishop of the Diocese, on August 15^th , 1979.

 In 1979, the next step was to order windows for the nave of the Cathedral. M. Rault wrote to Bishop Delaquis: “Frédéric and I have been studying and we are sending our best price to Wilf. It would be a pleasure to see your Cathedral as one of our best references in Western Canada.” The six smaller panes situated in the centre of these windows are almost repetitive to reproduce Msgr Maillard’s original work. Bishop Delaquis changed the border design of these windows by adding symbols of wheat and bunches of grapes. He selected the four Evangelists, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Baptist, as did Msgr. Maillard. Bishop Delaquis also added the seven Sacraments of the Church to be represented in the bottom square of each window. The eighth window was dedicated to the Anno Jubilaei 1930-1980. The windows of  Saints Peter, Paul, John and Luke were installed in September of 1980 and the windows of Saints Mark, Matthew, John the Baptist and Joseph were installed in September of 1982. 

 All that remained were the sixteen windows of the clerestory, eight in the transepts, two windows of the same size as the nave windows and a few small windows over the inside main, west and east doors of the Cathedral. Bishop Delaquis entrusted the last of the task to Father Armand Guénette, Pastor of the Cathedral. Msgr. Maillard, strongly believing that everyone has a guardian angel, had originally painted a guardian angel on each one of the sixteen smaller windows. Seeing that the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the fourth Glorious Mystery of the fifteen Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, Bishop Delaquis and Father Guénette dedicated fourteen windows to the Mysteries of the Rosary  and left two windows as guardian angels in remembrance of Msgr. Maillard. Isaiah the Prophet is represented in the stained glass by the west stairway and Moses is represented in the east stairway. The windows in the transepts have drawings of wheat, representing the prairies, and the stained glass above the doors are reproductions of the original designs painted by Msgr. Charles Maillard. The last group of windows was installed in June of 1984 by Mr. Paul Hanley. The blessing of the  windows of the Cathedral occured on October 7^th , 1984, by Bishop Noël Delaquis. The beautiful stained glass windows are religious teachings with warm and vibrant colours that give a new light to the Co-Cathedral.
